Hole 1

Description

A par 3 Hawtree signature hole over water, the only hole on the course without bunkers, which is a trait of many of the world’s top courses. This hole usually plays into the wind, better to be long than short as the approach slopes away from the green. The green is wide but narrow from front to back, so club selection is crucial. A tricky green with large breaking putts so normally requires more break, when putting across the green.

Hole 2

Description

A par 4 dogleg left. Favour the right side of the fairway as this will give the best view and line to the green. The three fairway bunkers are deep so play around them. The approach shot is guarded by a bunker short of the green and one to the right and mounds on the left. It is a long green so can be a 2 to 3 club difference depending on whether a front or back pin.

Hole 3

Description

A par 5 that needs to be played strategically so course management is vital. Best to play short of the three fairway bunkers as they are deep, plus you will get an even lie. Some take a chance by hitting between bunkers but this gives a downhill lie. Also be careful if laying up short of the water as the fairway slopes severely downhill. After negotiating the water hazard it is best for most to be short of the bunkers in the fairway short of the green. The approach is guarded by bunkers on the right and left. Do not overshoot the green as there is a steep dip.

Hole 4

Description

A par 4 with water and trees to the left. Long hitters must be careful of the water further down on the right. The approach shot is deceptive as it is further from the large fairway bunker to the green than it first appears. Favour the left-hand side of the green as this leaves the easiest chip shot or uphill putt and will keep you away from the run-off area and bunker on the right side of the green.

Hole 5

Description

A challenging par 3 with a two tiered green where you must not miss the green to the left. The safe option is a short right which again leaves an uphill chip or putt and keeps you away from the large bunker guarding the green. The middle of the green is optimal irrelevant of pin position.

Hole 6

Description

A long par 4 which normally plays downwind. There is a lake on the left side in play with the tee shot. The landing area from the tee slopes left to right towards the fairway bunker so favour the left side of the fairway. The approach shot to the green is guarded by two bunkers and a sharp slope on the right and a large run-off area to the left. The green is long so again can be 2 to 3 clubs from front to back and it slopes towards the lake on the right.

Hole 7

Description

A short par 4 with a tricky green. Favour the right side of the fairway as this gives a better line into the green. Be aware of the two grass bunkers either side of the fairway. A pin positioned on the left-hand side should not be attacked as there is a large, steep, intimidating bunker to the left. The green has many subtle breaks and can be difficult to read.

Hole 8

Description

Par 5 where the fairway slopes from right to left. The four deep bunkers parallel to the left of the fairway must be avoided. It is an uphill approach to the green which plays longer than appears. The green is protected by bunkers short and to the right plus a pot bunker in front of the green and a runoff area on the left. The green slopes from back to front so short of the pin leaves an uphill putt.

Hole 9

Description

An exciting par 5 hole, favour the right-hand side of the fairway as everything slopes from right to left. The furthest tree to the right of the hole is the ideal line for a layup shot short of the stream which runs diagonally across the fairway. The stream meanders through the fairway towards the green and down to the lake therefore is in play if short left. There is also a bunker on the left with a steep slope behind it.
