PÉTANQUE RULES
Quite simply, pétanque is about throwing your balls so that they land as close to the small ball, called the pig, as possible. The game begins with the large ring being placed on the gravel. It is the one you should stand in when you cast. Then lots will be drawn to see which team will start. A player from the team that wins the draw takes the pig and throws it between 6 and 10 meters away from the ring. The team decides the order in which the players roll. The first player throws a ball and tries to land as close to the pig as possible. Then, a player from the other team throws and tries to place his ball closer to the pig than the opponent’s.
Then the following principle applies: As soon as a team places a ball closer to the pig than the opponent’s, they must pass on to the other team. When one team has no more balls left, the other team throws the rest of its balls. When the last ball is thrown, points must be awarded. Only one team gets points in each round. The team that is closest to the pig gets as many points as they have balls closer to the pig than the other team’s closest ball.
The team that gets points also wins the right to throw the pig out in the next game. The ring is moved down to the other end of the field, the pig is thrown and a new competition can begin.
The team that first reaches 13 points has won the entire bathulj.
Dead ball and dead pig:
If the pig is hit and it stays on the field, then you just play on with the pig’s new position. Lines, edges and walls are *dead* if a ball dies because it hits a line or wall, then it is deleted. (but you get it back in the next game)
If the pig dies, the game ends. If only one team has balls left that have not been thrown, they get points equal to the number of balls they have not yet thrown. If several teams of balls remain, there will be no points awarded, and a new game will begin immediately.
Class division:
There are always two teams played against each other: TRIPLE is played three against three with two balls each.
DUBBEL is played two against two with three balls each. SINGLES are played one against one with three balls each.
